Packaging & Packaging Waste
The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) is a directly applicable EU law starting from
12 August 2026. Retailers must demonstrate compliance for all types of packaging in both B2B and
B2C distribution channels, with further requirements taking effect in the coming years, including
minimum recycled content, compostability mandates and packaging volume minimisation. This is not
simply reporting, but product-level compliance.

Digital Product Passport
From 2027, the Digital Product Passport (DPP) becomes mandatory for certain product groups,
requiring a scannable digital record that carries a product's information across its lifecycle.
It is fast becoming the defining compliance trend for retailers, with DPP pilots emerging across
markets worldwide. At the same time, the 13-digit barcode is being retired in favour of richer
scannable technologies such as QR codes and RFID, which means the coding practices you use today
may not meet compliance standards for much longer. The harder problem sits behind the code: a DPP
demands full lifecycle environmental footprint, primary data most suppliers are not yet equipped
to collect.

The EU Climate Law binds the bloc to a 55% reduction by 2030 and climate neutrality by 2050, and
